We are very excited to be a part of the Burnalong community and representing them in the Baltimore area for yoga.
I have to say that the notion of MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS is truly what brought me to MPower to begin with. Through our vibrant yoga community, I was introduced to Jason Herd. We chatted yoga, goals and life stories for a few hours. MPower wasn’t open yet, in fact I think construction had just begun. But Jason took a chance on me and after interviewing with him and Michelle, they offered me a teaching position. Talk about a meaningful connection.
I believe that yoga was brought to me. I was in a sad confusing place in my life and came across a postcard to try power vinyasa. It felt like a calling, so I went for it. A few months into my new hot practice, the teacher announced a teacher training – my heart dropped in utter fear so I knew in that moment I had to sign up. My life changed – empowerment through vulnerability – I am so grateful and so blessed to pass on this ancient practice.
On our first day of yoga teacher training, we were asked what our three most difficult poses (read: LEAST FAVORITE) were. At the time, headstand was my main nemesis, with Ardha Chandrasana – AKA Half Moon Pose, coming in a close second. Continue reading »
At the end of my 25th year, I was spending a lot of time on my mat. I was unhappy in a lot of areas of life, but also actively making changes towards improving for the first time I could ever recall. I had been interviewing for my “dream job”, and bombed in the home stretch; as I laid in Savasana bawling my eyes out, I realized that yoga was the one area of my life that made me feel ALIVE, and I needed more of it. I decided on a 200-hr training in Costa Rica mainly to deepen my practice, and wasn’t sure I’d ever teach, but after about six months back in Baltimore, my real “dream job” started showing up everywhere in my life… And here I am.

I was experiencing some depression and decided I needed to find a spiritual path. Growing up I never went to church regularly so spirituality was missing from my life. As my training progressed I discovered all of the wonderful things yoga can do for the mind AND the body. I think most people go into yoga for the physical benefits but grow in the opposite direction.
I am really into wheel these days. It opens my front hip flexors, heart, shoulders and upper back. In wheel the head falls below the heart and therefore you receive the benefits of an inversion. Continue reading »
The speed at which we live our lives puts our brain into a high gear: we tend to make decisions and movements in life without clear intention. Much of the time we go through the motions and they don’t have a lot of meaning. This spans from our physical actions (changing the radio station, eating a meal, folding laundry), to our words (conversations between family, friends and co-workers), to our inner dialogue (the thoughts that move through our head).
I use to live a VERY intense life. I was a trader at the Chicago Board of Trade and was boxing with a boxing coach three times a week. The repetitive movement of hitting the bags and my opponents lead to over use of my shoulder ligaments. Like over used rubber bands the elasticity in my shoulders were shot. The doctors thought it was the end of my workout career and a double surgery was a part of my future. I used yoga to rehab my shoulders and never needed surgery. I was addicted right from the start.
Flying Pigeon pose strengthens the shoulders, wrists, arms and core, and stretches the hips and legs. The pose can also help to improve balance and stimulate the digestive organs. Approach this pose with caution if you have any hip, knee or wrist injuries. Continue reading »
I have a strong connection to Moxie. Moxie means force of character, determination or nerve. Not just on my mat but every day off my mat. My personal mantra is lead life by making calculated risks. Always take chances, push yourself outside your comfort zone. Continue reading »
I first got into a consistent yoga practice when I was looking for something to compliment the running and lifting I was doing on a daily basis. From my first class I was hooked. I found more of a connection with my mind and body then in anything else I was partaking in. After a few months of growing my own practice I wanted to take it further and learn more and be able to share my love of yoga and what it brought to my life with others.
M.Power’s 6 foundations each speak to me in a different way. The one that resonates with me the most is ‘Mastery of the Moment’.
In the past I used to find myself in a routine of always multi taking and not being fully present. My “to do list” seemed never ending and I would constantly think about what was on it, no matter where I was. I was missing out on genuine connections and conversations because my mind was in 5 different places at once.
Pregnancy can take a toll on women’s core and this can cause diastasis recti or separation of the abdominal muscles. One way to help prevent this and/or repair it is by strengthening the transverse abdominals, the deep core muscles that hold everything in like a belt. Throughout my pregnancy and post-partum my favorite ways to strengthen my core is in triangle pose or trikonasana. Continue reading »

One of the things that drew me to M.Power is their commitment to the foundations that built the essence of the studio. Without a foundation it’s hard to build a home. M.Power feels like a home away from home. While each foundation is important, one that resonated with me was Mindful Movement. Mindful Movement can mean many things from the physical to community. “The whole essence of Zen consists in walking along the razors edge of NOW—to be so utterly, so completely present that no problem, no suffering, nothing that is not who you are in your essence can survive in you. I remember the first time I did crow pose. Nature Kids Summer Camp. What a glorious moment for 11 year old me! Until, I went for round two, and fell right on my face. This was my first yoga memory. At that time, I didn’t know it as “yoga,” and certainly not as I know yoga today. From that one meaningful connection, and then the countless others that followed it, I’ve found a lifelong practice. Now, I could not imagine my life without my yoga practice and my yoga community. Continue reading »
