Meet our instructor of the month for June, Elizabeth!
Elizabeth’s warmth and passion for yoga is totally contagious. You can find her on the schedule teaching M1 and our Prenatal classes, Mom-To-Be Yoga.
What led you to become a yoga instructor?
Truthfully I never thought I would be a yoga instructor! When I was pregnant I was looking to broaden my knowledge of yoga and human anatomy in general. While going through teacher training I realized that yoga brings me grace and humility. It grounds me and softens my ego and feelings of doubt. During pregnancy it helped me feel graceful and eased anxiety. I realized that I wanted to help give people this gift.
What yoga posture challenges you the most right now?
I have always been “afraid” of inversions and I am practicing getting out of my comfort zone. I’m working on taking my inversion practice away from the wall and letting go of my fear of falling. I think this is a bit of a metaphor for my life and off the matt I am also practicing trusting myself.
What is your favorite thing about teaching?
Helping people believe in themselves. It is my goal as a yoga instructor to make yoga approachable for everyone. I love having brand new yogis come to my class. Typically they are apprehensive at the beginning and leave with a smile. Not only do they trust me but they learn to trust themselves and their body. It is really an honor to have people give me this trust and I leave each class feeling very humbled.
Where would you most like to travel, and why?
I have a huge travel bucket list. On the top of the list are the Galapagos Islands. My favorite thing to do when I travel is to explore nature and what better place to do this?! I also love southeast Asia and next on my list is Vietnam and Laos. Ohh, I also have a goal of going on a yoga/surf retreat but I don’t think they allow babies so I might have to wait on that one.
Outside of teaching, what do you like to do for fun?
These days my idea of fun is a laid back day with my family. We love going on family hikes, exploring Baltimore and trying new restaurants. My husband and I have kayaks so when we can get a baby-sitter we like to get out on the water. I also make malas, dream catchers, and a myriad of other “crafts’. I love creating all types of art.
What is one thing about you that most people don’t know?
Well, I am a pretty open book, maybe to a fault. I don’t have many life regrets but I always wanted to be an actress and I will probably always wonder if I could have “made it”. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get back into it and you’ll see me performing in local theater productions!
