I was going to talk about moxie for this blog. Moxie is defined as a force of character, determination, or nerve. Specifically, I wanted to discuss the three principles that have guided my life through the years. They are: 1) don’t cry over spilt milk; 2) be yourself; and 3) learn something new every day. Then my husband turned on the movie The Secret, one of the most influential films I have seen. I decided I wanted to share what I loved about that movie, instead.
The first time I watched The Secret was in one of the courses during my 200-hour yoga teacher training. I was so excited to share the philosophy I learned from the film, I bought the DVD, made my husband watch it, and then lent it out to others. If you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it.
I am not going to go into detail about The Secret, but will highlight one of its most profound statements that resonates with me. The Secret is the law of attraction. You become and attract what you think about most, whether negative or positive.
Take a moment to categorize the types of thoughts you have in a day. Are they mostly negative, or positive? How many of us have heard and sympathized when someone complains, “Why does this always happen to me?” What thoughts led to that point?
Think about it like this: thoughts become things. You attract whatever you are dwelling on in your mind, even if it is negative. Your thoughts are just like an intention you may set for a yoga class—they should be positive affirmations. For example, “I am happy,” as opposed to “I don’t want to be sad,” or “I am on time” instead of “I don’t want to be late.” Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. What you think about, you bring about. You are the masterpiece of you, so start creating the you that you want, not the you that you don’t want.
